A fatal shooting occurred around 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 24, at 5076 Griggs Road and is set to be referred to a Harris County grand jury, according to a press release from the Houston Police Department. The deceased, a 29-year-old male, has not yet been identified, pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD patrol officers responded to a shooting call outside of King Best Mall at the above address, finding a male with a gunshot wound in the parking lot. Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced the man deceased at the scene.

The shooter, a male who was not injured in the incident, was detained at the scene. A preliminary investigation determined that the shooter and a family member had left a business and were returning to their vehicle when a black male suspect inside a white vehicle pointed a gun at them and demanded money. In fear for their lives, the shooter drew his own weapon and fired, striking the suspect.

The case is being referred to a grand jury after consultation with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
