Dr. Matthews-backed candidate defeats Judge Joseph Guillory in runoff election

PORT ARTHUR, TX – Brandon Bartie defeated incumbent Justice of the Peace Judge Joseph Guillory in Tuesday’s runoff election following months of public criticism and campaigning involving Dr. Candice Matthews.

Back in March, Dr. Matthews traveled from Houston to Jefferson County and spoke outside a polling location during Guillory’s reelection race. During that appearance, she accused Guillory of abusing his power and publicly stated he was going to lose his seat. There were also allegations raised that Guillory impersonated a peace officer.

No candidate secured a majority during the initial election, forcing the race into a runoff election that took place Tuesday.

Bartie ultimately defeated Guillory with the backing of Dr. Matthews, who had continued speaking publicly about the race leading up to the runoff.

Judge Guillory has continued to stand by his integrity throughout the election campaign.
