Man killed after fight at Katy-area party, investigators say shooter targeted victim

KATY, Texas — A man was shot and killed after a fight broke out during a large gathering in the Katy area early Sunday morning, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were dispatched around 12:15 a.m. to the 24600 block of Sandal Springs in reference to a fight disturbance. While the caller was still on the line with 911, shots were reported outside the home where the party was taking place.

When deputies arrived, they found an approximately 45-year-old Black male deceased at the scene.

Investigators determined a large party was taking place at the residence when a fight broke out involving multiple individuals. According to detectives, one of the people involved in the disturbance went to a vehicle, retrieved a firearm, and shot the victim multiple times.

Based on video evidence recovered during the investigation, detectives believe the shooter was directly involved in the fight. Investigators also believe the victim was specifically targeted and that the suspect did not fire randomly into the crowd.

The gathering is believed to have been a get-together party attended primarily by family members, along with other individuals who were not related. Detectives do not believe the shooter was a family member of the victim or of those hosting the gathering.

Investigators are working to positively identify the shooter. If a warrant is obtained, authorities said that information will be released.

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of family members. The investigation remains ongoing.
