Driver critically injured after vehicle goes airborne, crashes into another vehicle on East Freeway

HOUSTON — A driver was critically injured after a vehicle reportedly went airborne and crashed into another vehicle on the East Freeway early Sunday morning.

According to the Houston Police Department, the crash occurred around 2:17 a.m. on the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 between the Waco and Lockwood exits.

Witnesses reported a blue Ford Explorer was traveling on the frontage road at a high rate of speed when it lost control, went airborne over an embankment and landed on the eastbound freeway.

The Explorer then crashed into another vehicle occupied by four people.

Two occupants of the struck vehicle were transported to a hospital and were reported in stable condition. The driver of the Ford Explorer was transported to a hospital in critical condition.

Investigators said speed appears to have been a factor in the crash. It is not known at this time whether alcohol or drugs played a role.

The investigation remains ongoing.
