HOUSTON – A construction worker was killed while crews were completing a lane closure on the Gulf Freeway near Beltway 8, according to the Houston Police Department.

Police said another construction worker was operating a vehicle equipped with a Scorpion, an impact-attenuation device designed to absorb crashes and protect roadside workers, when the vehicle accidentally backed into the victim on the freeway.
According to investigators, the driver told officers he was being as cautious as possible while assisting with the lane closure when the collision occurred.
The construction worker was pronounced deceased at the scene. The investigation remains ongoing.
