Man detained after crashing into HPD patrol vehicle in northwest Houston

HOUSTON — A man was detained after crashing into a Houston Police Department patrol vehicle at the intersection of Clay Road and Gessner in northwest Houston.

According to the Houston Police Department, the patrol unit was traveling westbound on Clay Road when it collided with a civilian vehicle traveling northbound on Gessner.

Investigators are working to determine which driver had the right of way. Preliminary information indicates the HPD officer may have had a green light, while the civilian vehicle may have entered the intersection against a red light while traveling at a high rate of speed.

The civilian driver was detained at the scene and is being evaluated for possible driving while intoxicated or impairment.

The HPD officer was transported to a hospital with minor injuries and is expected to recover.

Police said the officer was not responding to an emergency call and was on normal patrol at the time of the crash.

Authorities also confirmed the civilian driver has a criminal history but did not release additional details.

The investigation remains ongoing.
