Candlelight vigil and protest held after fatal ICE shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo

HOUSTON, Texas – Community members, family members, and activists gathered Wednesday evening for a candlelight vigil and protest following the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo during an attempted arrest by federal immigration agents in Houston.

The gathering honored Salgado Araujo’s life while participants called for accountability and transparency in the investigation. Demonstrators carried candles, signs, and gathered in solidarity with the family, demanding answers about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The shooting occurred Tuesday in the 6800 block of Canal Street during what federal authorities described as a targeted enforcement operation. Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national, was fatally shot during the attempted arrest.

The vigil followed a news conference earlier in the day hosted by the Greater Houston Coalition for Justice, where community leaders and the victim’s family called for an independent investigation and greater transparency. Speakers also renewed calls for Congress to examine the shooting and for federal immigration agents to be equipped with body-worn cameras.

The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
