HOUSTON – A passenger was pronounced deceased after a Ford Mustang struck an Acura that was stopped on the shoulder of the Southwest Freeway early Sunday morning.

According to the Houston Police Department, the crash occurred around 1:45 a.m. on the inbound Southwest Freeway just before the Chimney Rock Road exit.

Investigators said the driver of the Acura had pulled onto the shoulder after the vehicle lost its front bumper and was attempting to retrieve it when the car was struck from behind by a gray Ford Mustang.

The driver of the Acura was transported to Ben Taub Hospital with a punctured lung.

A passenger in the Acura was pronounced deceased at the scene. Investigators were working to identify the victim pending notification of family members.

Police said there were signs of intoxication involving the 20-year-old woman driving the Ford Mustang. Investigators are obtaining a search warrant for a blood draw to determine her level of intoxication.

Police said there was no indication of any criminal activity beyond the crash itself. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office is also investigating the crash as authorities continue to determine whether intoxication was a factor.
