HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — One person is dead, and several others were injured after a multi-alarm apartment fire destroyed an eight-unit building at the Cypresswood Apartments earlier this morning.

According to the Klein Fire Department, firefighters and mutual aid agencies responded to the fire at 1:39 a.m. at the apartment complex near Cypresswood Drive and Kuykendahl Road. The first arriving crews encountered heavy fire through the roof and a partial structural collapse.

Before firefighters arrived, Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies, who were in the area on an unrelated call, spotted smoke and began knocking on doors to evacuate residents. Neighbors also assisted with the evacuations.

Firefighters from Klein Fire Department and Ponderosa Fire Department rescued one resident through a window and immediately began CPR. Despite extensive life-saving efforts, the victim was later pronounced deceased.

A total of 13 civilians were affected by the fire. Harris County ESD 11 Mobile Healthcare transported six people to area hospitals, while seven others were treated at the scene. Authorities said all occupants have been accounted for.

Five firefighters were also treated at the scene for heat exhaustion, dehydration and smoke inhalation. All are expected to recover.

The fire destroyed an eight-unit apartment building and displaced approximately 25 residents.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office.
