HOUSTON — A firefighter was injured while battling a fire at an abandoned school in Houston late Saturday night, where crews were expected to remain on scene through the morning.

According to the Houston Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched around 11:45 p.m. to the 3200 block of Center Street after receiving a report of a possible fire.

When crews arrived, they found fire inside the abandoned structure and began an offensive attack. As conditions changed, firefighters transitioned to defensive operations and continued battling the blaze from outside the building.

One firefighter was transported to a local hospital after suffering a twisted ankle during the response.

Officials said crews are expected to remain at the scene throughout the morning until the fire is fully extinguished.

The fire was at one point upgraded to a two-alarm response.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
