Man killed, woman critically injured in head-on crash on Tidwell Road

HOUSTON — A man was killed and a woman was critically injured in a head-on crash late Sunday night on Tidwell Road, according to the Houston Police Department.

The crash occurred just after 11 p.m. in the 9300 block of Tidwell Road and involved a GMC pickup truck and a Hyundai Sonata.

According to police, investigators believe the Hyundai Sonata crossed the center line and struck the GMC pickup head-on.

The male driver of the Hyundai was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased shortly after midnight.

The female driver of the GMC pickup was taken to Ben Taub Hospital, where she underwent surgery. Police said she remains in critical condition.

Preliminary findings indicate both speed and alcohol may have been factors in the crash. Investigators believe the Sonata driver may have been impaired, though the investigation remains ongoing. Police said the pickup driver showed no signs of intoxication.

Police said Tidwell Road is a dark roadway where speeding has been a recurring concern, but investigators have not yet determined the exact role speed played in the crash.

The roadway was expected to reopen before the Monday morning commute after crews cleared the wreckage.
