HOUSTON — Three women were injured in a shooting Tuesday night outside the Sunny Side Food Store in southeast Houston’s Sunnyside area, according to the Houston Police Department.

Officers responded around 10:40 p.m. to the store in the 9100 block of Scott Street after reports of gunfire.

Investigators said two women, both in their mid-30s, were standing in the parking lot when they were each struck once in the arm. A third woman, in her mid-40s, was inside a vehicle leaving the store when she was hit in the hand. She drove away before stopping in the 1200 block of Vera Lou Street, where officers located her.

All three women were transported to local hospitals and are expected to recover.

Police said officers who were nearby heard the gunfire and arrived within moments. Investigators believe the shots were fired from a grassy area across the street from the convenience store.

Authorities said the rapid succession of gunfire may have come from an automatic weapon or rifles, but that has not been confirmed.

One bullet struck the Sunny Side Food Store, passing through the building and into a cooler. No one inside the store was injured.

Investigators believe the suspects may have fled on foot before possibly getting into a vehicle, but that remains under investigation. An HPD helicopter searched the area but did not locate any suspects.

Police have not determined a motive and continue working to identify those responsible.
