HOUSTON — Malik Baker is the second suspect apprehended in connection with the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Caleb Mitchell.

According to the Houston Police Department, officers responded to a shooting at the Sedona Square Apartments, located at 11715 South Glen Drive, around 5:40 p.m. May 2. Mitchell was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in a breezeway and pronounced deceased at the scene.

Court documents allege Mitchell was killed during an attempted robbery involving a proposed gun and drug trade. Mitchell was reportedly considering trading his gun for another firearm or a half-pound of marijuana and $175.

Investigators believe Mitchell’s gun was taken during the shooting. They also believe a .40-caliber Glock equipped with a switch, which Mitchell photographed shortly before his death, was used in the shooting.

Baker, 18, and Gary Johnson, 21, are charged with capital murder in the 176th Criminal District Court for their alleged roles in the shooting.

Johnson was arrested May 27 by the HPD Westside Division Gang Unit and booked into the Harris County Jail.

Baker was apprehended in New Orleans on Aug. 14 and charged Aug. 21. He is awaiting extradition to Harris County.
