HOUSTON — A hospital security sergeant shot a man who allegedly pulled out a knife inside the emergency room at Memorial Hermann, 921 Gessner Road, after three tasers failed to stop him.

The man, who is in his early 30s, arrived at the hospital around 6 p.m. seeking help after stating he was suicidal. Hospital staff treated him and placed him in a secluded room.

Shortly before 9 p.m., the man pulled out a knife. Security officers attempted to contain him and deployed three Tasers. The man fell after the final Taser was deployed.

A security sergeant attempted to remove the knife, but the man came to and grabbed it again. The sergeant discharged his firearm, striking the man three times in the torso.

Medical staff immediately began treating the man. He was expected to be transferred to another hospital for a different level of care.

Hospital staff were familiar with the man from previous visits, but no prior trouble involving him at the hospital was known.
