HOUSTON — Dr. Matthews, community advocates, Harris County residents and families who say they have been affected by proceedings in the 280th District Court gathered outside a fundraiser for Judge Curvey earlier this evening.

The demonstration was held outside King Steak on Post Oak Boulevard. Protesters raised concerns involving judicial impartiality, recusals, protective-order proceedings, courtroom practices and the treatment of litigants.

“We have to hold these elected officials accountable,” Dr. Matthews said. “They work for us. We don’t work for them.”

Several protesters shared their experiences with the court. One mother said she lost custody of her three children after seeking a protective order. The mother alleged that her request was denied and that she was directed toward mediation despite concerns about her children’s safety.

Dr. Matthews said five protective-order cases filed against her were dismissed and alleged the filings were retaliation for her criticism of Curvey and the court.

Protesters also questioned campaign contributions collected during the fundraiser and said they planned to review Curvey’s campaign finance reports. They urged Harris County voters to oppose Curvey in the November election.

During the demonstration, King Steak staff brought free food and water outside for the protesters. Participants thanked the restaurant before continuing the protest.

The allegations made during the protest have not been independently verified. No response from Curvey was included in the recorded demonstration.
