ATASCOCITA, Texas — A 2-year-old girl was pronounced deceased after she was found submerged in a swimming pool at a vacant neighboring home.
Harris County Precinct 4 deputies were called to the 19000 block of Pine Trace Court after the child’s family reported her missing.
A Harris County Sheriff’s Office homicide detective said the girl’s grandmother had been in the backyard with the children when she became momentarily distracted by another child. When she turned around, the 2-year-old was gone.
Family members searched for the girl and went next door within minutes because they knew the vacant home had a swimming pool. They found the girl submerged and began CPR, but she remained unresponsive.
The child was flown by Life Flight to a children’s hospital in Houston, where she was pronounced deceased.
The vacant home was reportedly being remodeled. Investigators were told its back gate was usually open, but whether it was open when the child entered the property remains under investigation.
Detectives were working to identify the owner and obtain legal authority to search the property. No signs of trauma or neglect had been found, and the family was cooperating with investigators.
The death appeared to be accidental, but the medical examiner will make the final determination.
