HOUSTON, TX — The family of Louis Erebia is calling for charges against Woody Whyte and questioning why the man charged with Erebia’s murder remained on probation before the shooting. Erebia, 56, was fatally shot June 6 after he went to help locate his son’s truck, which had been taken at gunpoint.

At a press conference, Erebia’s sister-in-law, Amber Burrough, said the family believes London Hogan did not act alone. Speakers identified Whyte as the driver of a second vehicle involved in the events surrounding the shooting. They said Whyte had not been charged as of the press conference. Their account of his involvement remains an allegation.

Hogan is charged with murder and two aggravated offenses in connection with the shooting. He has been denied bail.

Andy Kahan, director of victim services and advocacy for Crime Stoppers of Houston, said Hogan faced four felony charges in Louisiana while on probation in Harris County and was later convicted of one of those offenses. Kahan said prosecutors filed a motion to revoke Hogan’s probation, but Hogan was allowed to remain on probation. Kahan and Burrough criticized Judge Bell’s handling of the matter, saying the decision put the community at risk.

Kahan said he and family members met with the Harris County district attorney earlier today to discuss the case and possible additional charges. He described the meeting as productive but announced no charging decision.

The family and Kahan plan to travel to Austin tomorrow to speak at a Texas House Select Committee on Governmental Oversight hearing. They want lawmakers to examine probation decisions and accountability in criminal cases.
