HOUSTON, Texas – A mother allegedly fatally shot her 4-year-old daughter before shooting herself at a west Houston townhouse. According to the Houston Police Department, officers responded around 5:45 p.m. to the 300 block of Terra Reserve Place.

Officers and Houston Fire Department crews entered the townhouse and found the girl deceased with a gunshot wound. Her mother, approximately 30, also had a gunshot wound and was transported to a hospital in critical condition. She is expected to survive.

Police believe the mother shot her daughter and then attempted to kill herself. The girl’s stepfather and a babysitter were downstairs when they heard gunfire. They went upstairs and began performing CPR.

Police said a custody hearing had taken place earlier in the day and that the mother may have lost custody of the girl to the child’s father.

Homicide investigators were conducting an investigation and planned to contact the district attorney’s office after completing their work at the scene. Police said they did not believe there was an ongoing danger to the public.
