Woman killed after pickup strikes patrol vehicle blocking traffic for overturned semi truck carrying applesauce

HOUSTON, Texas – A woman was found deceased after her red pickup truck struck the back of a Houston police patrol vehicle blocking traffic on northbound U.S. 59 near the 610 Loop. One officer was transported to a hospital for evaluation.

According to the Houston Police Department, officers were responding to a traffic hazard after a semitruck carrying applesauce overturned and spilled part of its load onto the 610 Loop. They were blocking traffic on northbound U.S. 59 when the pickup struck the patrol vehicle.

Police said the pickup appeared to be traveling at a high rate of speed, with very little braking before the collision.

The woman was the pickup’s only occupant. Her identity and age are pending further investigation.

The officer transported to the hospital was expected to be okay, and no major officer injuries were reported.

Investigators had not determined whether intoxication played a role and the crash remains under investigation.
