A man died at a hospital after he was struck and fell unresponsive during a fight at an auto body shop in the 15100 block of Willis street in north Harris County.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, two men who knew each other got into a verbal argument that escalated into a physical altercation. Other people witnessed the fight, which continued for some time before one man allegedly struck the other.
The man fell, did not get back up and was unresponsive. Someone called 911, and deputies and emergency medical personnel arrived and performed lifesaving measures. He was transported to a hospital, where his death was confirmed.
Investigators were still working to formally identify the man, who was believed to be in his late 30s to early 40s. The other man was believed to be in his 20s.
The men were possibly family members, potentially cousins. One was a customer, while the other occasionally helped at the shop.
The cause of death remained undetermined. Investigators said an autopsy was expected within 24 hours of the briefing to help determine whether a health condition, a blow to the head or chest, or an injury from striking the ground contributed to his death.
Detectives interviewed those present and recovered the shop’s surveillance recording system. Investigators said the entire altercation was recorded.
The sheriff’s office said both men appeared to have actively participated in the fight. The other man remained at the scene, and everyone present cooperated with investigators.
Investigators are handling the case as a homicide investigation and plan to submit the completed case to the district attorney’s office for grand jury review. That review would consider potential criminal responsibility, including whether the encounter involved self-defense or mutual combat.
