Man killed by red-light runner in west Houston; officer struck during investigation

HOUSTON — An adult man died in a two-vehicle crash at Hillcroft Avenue and Richmond Avenue around 1:49 a.m. Oct. 10 after a driver ran a red light, according to police.

Multiple witnesses reported that the suspect’s vehicle was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed in the 3100 block of Hillcroft before running the light and striking another vehicle.

Houston Fire Department crews extricated a man from a vehicle. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police described him as possibly in his late 20s.

The suspect left the scene a short distance before responding patrol officers took him into custody. Police evaluated him for intoxication but said he did not meet that threshold.

During the investigation, multiple vehicles breached police barriers. Police said intoxicated drivers struck multiple patrol cars. A sergeant on foot was struck by a vehicle and sustained minor, non-life-threatening injuries.

A passenger in the first vehicle that breached the barrier was taken into custody on a felony warrant. Other drivers were evaluated for driving while intoxicated and transported for further follow-up.
