Family, attorney says ICE denied Miguel Parra-Hernandez deines ri

HOUSTON, Texas — Attorney Kim Bruno said Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents interrupted a hospital meeting with Miguel Parra-Hernandez and had her escorted out, preventing her from continuing a confidential conversation with her client.

Bruno, who represents Parra-Hernandez and his family, said they spoke for about 10 to 15 minutes before ICE agents entered the room, recorded the conversation and asked her to leave. She said hospital security and police escorted her out after an ICE supervisor became involved.

According to Bruno, agents said Parra-Hernandez was detained and that they had no knowledge of a letter confirming her representation. She disputed those explanations, saying his family had hired her and he had not been processed or assigned an immigration identification number.

Bruno said agents were improperly applying their procedures and denying Parra-Hernandez access to legal representation. She said the encounter frightened him while he was recovering from his injuries.

Parra-Hernandez was hospitalized Saturday after being struck by a vehicle driven by an ICE agent near Clay Road and Highway 6 in west Harris County. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the collision. ICE previously said Parra-Hernandez ran in front of its vehicle and was struck.

FIEL Executive Director César Espinosa clarified that both legs were injured, but only Parra-Hernandez’s right leg was broken, with fractures in three places. He said Parra-Hernandez had undergone surgery and needed additional procedures, some delayed because of swelling. He was given a timeline of about six weeks before he could put weight on the leg.

Bruno said the legal team was exploring humanitarian relief and habeas corpus options. His representatives also said they were seeking protection for him and potential witnesses from authorities, including the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
