Colby Tyler charged with capital murder in fatal shooting of Tony Tran during robbery

HOUSTON, TX – Houston police have arrested Colby Tyler, 25, in connection with a fatal robbery and shooting that occurred at 7613 Boone Road about 4:35 p.m. on Aug. 12, 2025. Tyler is charged with capital murder, evading arrest, and tampering with evidence in the 177th State District Court.

Officers responded to the location and found a 65-year-old male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Houston Fire Department paramedics transported him to a hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. Investigators determined two suspects exited a vehicle, robbed, and shot the victim before fleeing in a vehicle driven by a third person.

HPD Westside Patrol Crime Suppression Team officers located the suspect vehicle nearby. As they investigated, one suspect got into the vehicle. Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the driver refused to stop, leading to a pursuit that ended when the vehicle crashed near the 610 South Loop and Scott Street. Tyler attempted to flee on foot but was quickly detained.

While HPD has not officially released the victim’s name, court documents identify him as Tony Tran. The shooting occurred in front of the Tony Nguyen Insurance storefront in a shopping center.

Police have not released the identities of the additional suspects, described only as Black males. Anyone with information is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
