Traffic stop leads to suspect with felony warrant being tased and shot while resisting arrest

HOUSTON, TX – A suspect with a felony warrant is in critical condition after being tased and then shot by a Houston Police officer while resisting arrest during a traffic stop early Sunday morning in northeast Houston.

The incident occurred around 1:40 a.m. in the 4700 block of Tidwell. Officers conducted a stop for a traffic violation and determined that the driver had an active felony warrant.

When officers attempted to arrest the suspect, a struggle ensued. The suspect was tased but continued to resist. One officer discharged his firearm during the encounter, striking the suspect.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. No officers or other individuals were injured.

Two other passengers inside the vehicle were detained. Whether the suspect was armed remains under investigation.

The Houston Police Department’s Homicide Division, Special Investigations Unit, Internal Affairs Division, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office are investigating.

Body-worn camera footage will be released within 30 days in accordance with department policy.
