Woman killed, deputy injured during separate incidents on SH 249 at Old Bammel North Houston Road

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A woman died after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross State Highway 249 earlier today near Old Bammel North Houston Road.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Vehicular Crimes Division, deputies were dispatched to an auto-pedestrian crash at approximately 10:32 p.m. Initial reports indicated a black passenger vehicle had struck a woman in the roadway and left the scene. However, authorities later learned the driver had returned to the location.

Investigators determined the four-door passenger vehicle was traveling southbound on SH 249 after passing through the intersection when the woman ran eastbound across the roadway and was struck.

The woman was transported by ambulance to a hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased.

According to investigators, the pedestrian was not within a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision. Traffic signals in the area were functioning properly when the crash occurred, and investigators said the driver had a green light.

Authorities said the driver remained at the scene, showed no signs of intoxication and was cooperative with investigators. No charges are expected in connection with the fatal crash at this time.

During the investigation, a separate incident occurred nearby involving a Harris County deputy. Authorities said a deputy walking across SH 249 was struck by a vehicle making a right turn from Old Bammel North Houston Road.

The deputy sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital. The driver involved in that incident was arrested on a charge related to possession of suspected narcotics, according to investigators.

The identity of the woman killed in the original crash has not been released as authorities continue their investigation.
