Teen takeover at Discovery Green leads to shots fired, two detained with firearms

HOUSTON — Houston police responded to a large gathering at Discovery Green after receiving reports of a “teen takeover” involving hundreds of juveniles and adults.

According to police, officers were dispatched around 9:23 p.m. to the 1500 block of McKinney Street and found an estimated 500 to 600 juveniles and various adults gathered at the park. Additional Houston Police Department resources responded to assist with crowd control.

Police said their goal was to prevent the large crowd from dispersing and developing into another location, specifically the FIFA Fan Fest. Resources from the Downtown Division and Patrol Support Division responded to the scene, while captains coordinated additional personnel and resources through phone calls. Rapid mobilization patrol units from stations across the city were also requested due to the size of the crowd.

While officers were dispersing the crowd, another large group gathered across the street. Police said multiple gunshots were fired from that location, prompting numerous officers to run toward the area where the gunfire occurred.

Officers continued crowd dispersal efforts following the first round of gunfire. No injuries were reported, and no officers were injured.

Approximately 10 to 15 minutes later, a second round of shots was fired. Police said more than 100 units ultimately responded to assist with the incident.

Officers remained on scene for several hours attempting to disperse the crowd. Police said they were able to prevent incidents from occurring at the FIFA Fan Fest.

During the response, one juvenile male and one adult male were detained. Police said both individuals were found in possession of firearms and were located in the area where the shots were fired.

An investigative division is assisting with the ongoing investigation. The detained individuals will likely be taken downtown for further investigation. No charges have been announced.
