HOUSTON – A 5-year-old child died after being found unresponsive in the swimming pool at the Cortland Wortham Apartments on the Fourth of July, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to a life-in-danger call at the apartment complex in the 10225 block of Wortham Boulevard, where EMS personnel were already administering CPR to the child.
The child was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
Detectives said the child’s mother and aunt were at the hospital with him after the incident. Detectives said the mother and aunt were at another part of the pool and were apparently not watching the child at the time he went underwater.
Detectives said at least 30 people were at the pool when deputies arrived. Many left before investigators reached the scene, but detectives said those individuals have since been identified and will be interviewed.
Detectives said they believe the child went underwater at some point before another patron found him unresponsive in the pool. Patrons pulled the child from the water before EMS began treatment.
Detectives are working to obtain surveillance video from apartment management as they determine when the child went underwater, how long he remained submerged, and the circumstances leading up to the incident.
The investigation remains ongoing. Detectives said the facts of the case will be presented to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, which will determine whether any criminal charges are filed.
