Man shot while allegedly attempting to break into North Shepherd pool hall

HOUSTON – A man in his 20s was shot in the leg after police say he and another person were attempting to break into a pool hall in the 7200 block of North Shepherd around 2 a.m.

According to the Houston Police Department, officers initially responded to reports of a shooting but were not immediately sure where the incident had occurred. The wounded man was later found at a nearby Jack in the Box after seeking help.

Police said an employee in his 70s, who was at the business and takes care of the property, heard loud banging coming from the rear of the building. The employee armed himself with a pistol and went outside to investigate.

Police said the employee encountered one person near the side of the building, who alerted another individual behind the business. Police said the second suspect, who was reportedly carrying crowbars, hammers and other tools, came around the corner and charged toward the employee.

The employee fired one shot, striking the suspect in the leg, according to police.

Police said both suspects fled the scene on foot. The wounded suspect later went to a nearby Jack in the Box and reportedly asked an employee to call his girlfriend instead of 911. The employee instead contacted 911 after realizing something was wrong.

Officers responded to the restaurant, took the wounded suspect into custody and transported him to a local hospital. Police said his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The employee was not injured during the incident.

The investigation remains ongoing. No additional information about the second suspect was immediately released.
