HOUSTON – An 18-year-old man was pronounced deceased after a shooting early Sunday outside a cantina in north Houston. Authorities have now charged the suspected shooter with murder.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded early Sunday morning to a business in the 14900 block of the North Freeway after receiving reports of a shooting.

Deputies found two male victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Jonathan Mata, 18, was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. A 20-year-old man was also transported to a hospital and is listed in fair condition.

Investigators said the shooting occurred after an argument between two groups in the parking lot escalated. Witnesses told detectives the suspected shooter went to his vehicle, retrieved a firearm, and opened fire before fleeing the scene.

With assistance from a witness who followed the suspect while providing updates to 911, and with help from the Houston Police Department, authorities located the suspect and his vehicle.

The suspect was identified as Juan Lopez, 19.

Harris County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Detectives charged Lopez with murder in connection with the shooting. He has been booked into the Harris County Jail.

Investigators previously said the two victims are believed to be family members, possibly cousins. Detectives also believe only one shooter was involved and continue working to recover the firearm and review surveillance video from the business.
