TEXAS, Texas — Charleston White made a series of controversial remarks before a single shot was fired as he was leaving Dr. Matthews’ birthday celebration at Nickel Bar and Grill in Houston’s 5th Ward.

The event featured community leaders, elected officials, and guests gathered to celebrate Dr. Matthews’ birthday. During the event, Republican Chris Daniel received an endorsement for Harris County Clerk before White addressed the crowd.

During his speech, White repeatedly used racial slurs while criticizing members of the audience for talking over what he described as an important discussion about the political process. He urged attendees to become involved in local elections, saying political power begins at the local level.

White also criticized what he described as disruptive behavior from intoxicated attendees, saying future events should remove those who were interfering with political discussion. He referenced local elected officials and county commissioners while encouraging civic participation.

At one point, White warned that rights are not permanent and said people would complain “when we go back to slavery” if they failed to participate in the political process. He also claimed that only a small percentage of Houston children can read at or above grade level and used that assertion to criticize the audience’s willingness to listen.

Later in his remarks, White said some people at the event appeared to be “looking for trouble” before concluding with criticism of the Black community.

A single shot was fired as White was leaving the birthday celebration. The circumstances surrounding the gunfire were not immediately clear, and no additional information was immediately available.

Later on social media, Charleston White claimed, “J Prince Sr had a Mob Ties member shoot at me in the car… I’m still in Houston and I’m not scared.”

Authorities have not confirmed White’s claim, and there is no public evidence at this time linking J Prince Sr. or anyone associated with Mob Ties to the shooting.
