HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A woman believed to be in her 60s was found deceased inside a dumpster behind a shopping center in north Houston on Thursday, prompting a Harris County Sheriff’s Office homicide investigation.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded shortly after 11 a.m. to the 3900 block of Aldine Mail Route Road after receiving a report that a body had been found inside a dumpster.

Deputies located an unresponsive white woman, believed to be in her 60s, inside the dumpster. EMS responded and pronounced her deceased at the scene.

Investigators said family members were also at the location after searching for the woman. They told investigators they had last communicated with her about two days earlier and became concerned when they could no longer reach her. After learning her vehicle had been towed from the area, they came to the shopping center and discovered her inside the dumpster.

Authorities said the woman’s vehicle had reportedly been towed after it was blocking a business driveway.

At this time, investigators said there are no obvious signs of trauma, but the Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.

Preliminary information indicates the woman was known to search through dumpsters for discarded items, and investigators believe that may be related to why she was at the location. Authorities also said family members indicated she may have had mental health issues, but that information has not been confirmed.

Detectives are reviewing surveillance video, interviewing witnesses and family members, and working to establish a timeline of the woman’s movements before she was found.

Investigators said there is currently no evidence indicating she was murdered and then placed inside the dumpster, but the investigation remains ongoing pending the medical examiner’s findings.
