HOUSTON, TX – Pinkhouse Houston joined Dr. Matthews, Hoodies 4 Healing and other community partners Saturday at Cullen Park Apartments for a back-to-school event providing backpacks, school supplies and other items to children.
Dr. Matthews highlighted PinkHouse Houston as one of the sponsors of the third back-to-school outreach event. The effort brought businesses, community organizations, vendors and law enforcement together to help families prepare their children for the upcoming school year.
Dr. Matthews highlighted PinkHouse Houston’s involvement and the participation of members of Houston’s nightlife community.
“You can make it rain all day long, but why not make it rain on these children as well?” Dr. Matthews said while discussing the importance of businesses pouring resources back into the community.
DJ Hefna with One Deep Entertainment was also among those supporting the event. He said the group was there to support the community and provide backpacks and other items, adding that additional outreach efforts are planned, including around Christmas.
Top Notch Mobile Security also participated. A representative said the company wanted to provide children with essential tools needed to succeed in school.
Rosemary Tucker with Hoodies 4 Healing was among the community partners supporting the event. Tucker discussed the organization’s ongoing outreach, including serving Houston’s homeless population, and said more than 129,000 hot meals have been served over six years.
Additional vendors included Jaiden’s Juice and Piggy’s Smack Snacks.
Dr. Matthews said Cullen Park Apartments was previously a property she highlighted over conditions involving rats and roach infestations. She said improvements have since been made, including new appliances, and that returning for the giveaway helped demonstrate the transition at the property.
Children received clear backpacks, paper, pens and other school materials. Dr. Matthews said the goal was to make sure children in the community had what they needed before returning to school.
Representatives from Harris County Precinct 7 also attended as part of the community policing effort. Dr. Matthews said their participation gave children an opportunity to interact with law enforcement in a community setting.
Families formed a large line during the distribution as organizers worked to make sure every child received a backpack and other supplies.
