HOUSTON, TX — Houston Stringer was targeted this morning after beginning an investigation into reports that a man had been appearing at crash scenes to solicit victims and their loved ones for potential lawsuits.
At the time of the incident, Houston Stringer was covering a fatal crash in southwest Houston. A witness saw three individuals wait for Houston Stringer to step away from the vehicle before walking behind it and photographing the license plate. The witness also obtained the license plate number of the vehicle the three individuals were using.
The subject at the center of the Houston Stringer investigation frequently wears a T-shirt bearing the name of what appears to be an inactive news website. One of the three individuals seen this morning was wearing the same news outlet T-shirt, providing the initial connection between the group and the subject under investigation.
On Friday, Houston Stringer contacted the law firm the subject has identified on social media as his employer, as well as the State Bar of Texas. Both were given until Friday, Sept. 4, 2026, to respond.
Texas Penal Code Section 38.12 addresses barratry and the solicitation of professional employment, conduct commonly described as “ambulance chasing.”
The State Bar of Texas website says lawyers, with limited exceptions, can face discipline for calling or visiting someone involved in a crash to solicit that person as a client. The rules also prohibit lawyers from using another person, including a nonlawyer, to solicit clients on their behalf.
The original goal of the Houston Stringer investigation was to stop the subject from coming to crash scenes and engaging in what Houston Stringer believes amounts to preying on vulnerable victims. Following this morning’s incident, Houston Stringer plans to release the findings after the response deadline passes.
