HOUSTON, TX — A man wanted on a warrant for indecency with a child by sexual contact was fatally shot by Houston police around 9:30 p.m. last night at Peace Love Dogs, 9619 Yupondale Drive, where he worked.

Houston Police Chief Diaz said officers confirmed the warrant and located the man through surveillance. A manager confirmed he was in the back of the pet care facility. Diaz said the man made several attempts to evade officers, including trying to jump a back fence, but remained on the property.

A canine handler and a crime suppression officer entered a back area to speak with him. Diaz said the man turned off the lights in a room, then appeared with a weapon as the officers came around a corner. He did not comply with repeated commands to put it down.

Officers released the police dog. Diaz said the man made a motion toward the dog, and officers fired, striking him two or three times. Officers began CPR, but the man was pronounced deceased at the scene. The dog was not injured.

Other employees were inside the business. Diaz said the manager asked them to leave after the shooting. Both officers wore body cameras, and the facility has surveillance video. HPD’s homicide and internal affairs divisions and the district attorney’s office will investigate.
