Dr. Matthews confronts Texas attorney over alleged derogatory remarks about Black women

TEXAS – Dr. Candice Matthews confronted a Texas attorney outside a Harris County courthouse after accusing him of making racist and derogatory comments about Black women.

Dr. Matthews accused attorney CJ Grisham of previously referring to Black women as “bitches” and “hoes” and repeatedly challenged him to make those same remarks directly to her.

“You’re the one that like calling Black women bitches and hoes and stuff,” Dr. Matthews told Grisham during the confrontation.

The confrontation happened after a court hearing involving two women Dr. Matthews said provided information connected to the Nolan Wells case. The women were granted a continuance and are scheduled to return to court Oct. 13 at 1:30 p.m.

Dr. Matthews also accused Grisham and others from Smith County of making racist social media posts.

“I don’t tolerate racism. I don’t tolerate sexism,” Dr. Matthews said after the confrontation.

She said people are entitled to their opinions and free speech but said she would not tolerate what she described as disrespect toward Black women.

“You can have your opinions. Everybody has free speech,” Dr. Matthews said. “But what you’re not going to do is disrespect my sisters.”

The confrontation became heated and included profanity as Dr. Matthews continued challenging Grisham and others while they left the area.

At one point, Dr. Matthews said she would travel to Smith County and would contact the Smith County sheriff before going there.

The accusations against Grisham are allegations made by Dr. Matthews.
