HOUSTON, TX – A man wearing what officers described as a “Dumb and Dumber” character costume was critically wounded after a resident shot him inside a west Houston apartment around 2:20 a.m., according to the Houston Police Department.
The shooting happened at the Phoenician Apartments, located at 2345 Bering Drive.
Police said the resident was asleep on the couch while his girlfriend and their 1-year-old child were sleeping in another room. He woke up to someone jiggling the door and apparently trying to kick it once.
The resident retrieved an AR-15 rifle and looked through the peephole. He did not recognize the man and did not see any weapons. He opened the door to determine what the man wanted.
His girlfriend came out after hearing the commotion and told the resident she did not recognize the man. Police said the man then rushed into the apartment, repeatedly claiming it was his.
The resident tried to push him out before firing one shot, striking him in the upper body. They immediately called 911.
Houston Fire Department personnel transported the wounded man to a hospital in critical condition. The resident, his girlfriend and their child were unharmed. Police said the resident and his girlfriend were cooperating with investigators.
The wounded man lives around the corner in the same apartment complex and was wearing an orange suit and top hat.
Police were investigating whether he mistakenly believed he was entering his own apartment. Investigators had not confirmed whether he was intoxicated or returning from a party and had been unable to speak with him because of his condition.
