HPD Officers shoot suspect who opened door and fired at Officers at a Houston Apartment Complex near Downtown

HOUSTON – A suspect was fatally shot by Houston Police Department officers after opening fire on them at an apartment complex north of downtown on Friday. The incident occurred around 5:45 p.m. at 1250 Leona Street, where officers were responding to an assault call.

According to Executive Chief Tien of the Houston Police Department via a media briefing posted to X , the officers approached the specified apartment and made their presence known by knocking on the door and ringing the doorbell. A man inside the apartment responded by opening the door slightly and firing shots toward the officers. The officers returned fire, sought cover, and called for additional support, treating the situation as a case involving a barricaded suspect.

During the standoff, officers heard a woman’s voice inside the apartment, prompting them to enter. Inside, they found the male suspect deceased. The woman present in the apartment did not sustain any significant injuries, and no officers were harmed during the encounter.

The suspect, believed to be in his mid-20s, was found alongside two firearms within the apartment, including an AK-type pistol and another semi-automatic pistol. The officers involved in the shooting, one with three years of service and the other with less than a year, will be assigned to administrative duties pending an investigation into the incident.
