HOUSTON, Texas — A man was fatally shot while trying to drive away from two men at The Element Apartments in the 400 block of Greens Road around 9 p.m., according to police.

Officers responding to a shooting call found the adult male with a gunshot wound to his upper body. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Police said surveillance footage showed the victim sitting in a parked vehicle when two men approached him. After an apparent conversation or exchange of words, the victim attempted to drive away at a high rate of speed. At least one of the men fired in his direction, and the victim’s vehicle crashed into a tree.

Officers learned the suspects lived at the apartment complex and might be inside their unit. Patrol officers established a perimeter, and a patrol support team arrived to assist and began calling for the occupants to come outside.

Two male suspects came out and were taken into custody. A woman and a child, approximately 5 or 6 years old, were also safely removed from the apartment. Neither was injured. Police identified the woman as an occupant of the unit.

Police did recover a handgun, though it remains unclear if it was in the apartment or immediate area.

Homicide detectives are investigating what led to the shooting.
