HOUSTON, Texas — A driver was pronounced deceased after a car struck a pole and split in half in southwest Houston around 3 a.m. this morning, according to Houston police.
Southwest Patrol officers responded to the single-vehicle crash at South Sam Houston Parkway West and South Post Oak Road.
An off-duty officer waiting at a traffic light witnessed the vehicle traveling approximately 80 mph through the intersection before striking the pole. The impact split the vehicle in half and ejected the driver.
The off-duty officer reported the crash and provided a statement. Houston Fire Department personnel attempted lifesaving measures, but the driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Police believe the driver was an 18-year-old male. The vehicle appeared to be an older-model Audi sedan.
Personal belongings suggested the driver may have been coming from a Halloween party, but that has not been confirmed. Investigators have not determined whether alcohol was a factor.
