BILLINGS, MT – Multiple employees were hospitalized after a methamphetamine incineration incident caused smoke to fill the Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter on September 10, 2025, according to the Billings Police Department.

The incident occurred midday when a partner agency was burning methamphetamine inside the animal control incinerator, which is owned by the City of Billings. During the burn, the incinerator experienced a negative pressure issue, pushing smoke into the shelter building.
Several employees became ill and were transported to both Billings Clinic and Intermountain Health for treatment. Shelter staff quickly evacuated the dog area, and cats were moved outside for safety.
According to BPD, the department follows a scheduled protocol for narcotics destruction, including health department notification and documentation of each disposal. The same incinerator has long been used for drug disposal by BPD and partner agencies.
The Billings Police Department thanked the shelter employees for their quick response and the medical staff from both hospitals for their care.
Questions regarding the incident can be directed to Public Relations Sgt. Jeff Stovall at (406) 208-5726 or stovallje@billingsmt.gov.
