Man dies following Carter Lake shooting, Omaha police launch homicide investigation

OMAHA, NE – The Omaha Police Department has confirmed that 27-year-old Dequrae Murrel has died following a shooting at Carter Lake on October 5, 2025. Murrel succumbed to his injuries at the hospital on October 6. The OPD Homicide Unit is now leading the investigation.

Police initially responded to two separate reports of shootings around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, one at 809 Carter Lake Shore Drive North in Levi Carter Park, and the other at Kelly’s Liquor on North 30th Street. Officers found a female victim with a life-threatening gunshot wound at the liquor store. Investigators determined she had been shot at Carter Lake. Medics transported her to the Nebraska Medical Center in extremely critical condition with CPR in progress.

Additional victims with superficial wounds were also located at the Carter Lake scene.
