Man searching for lost item struck and killed on Beltway 8 service road

HOUSTON, TX – A 24-year-old man was killed after being struck by a vehicle along the South Sam Houston Parkway East service road in southeast Houston.

The crash occurred around 10:20 p.m. in the 7201 block of South Sam Houston Parkway East, also known as Beltway 8. According to the Houston Police Department Vehicular Crimes Division, a blue BMW 740 was traveling eastbound when the driver struck a pedestrian who was standing in the main lanes of the roadway searching for a lost item.

Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced the pedestrian, identified as Juston Smith, 24, deceased at the scene.

The 50-year-old male driver remained at the scene, did not show signs of intoxication, and was questioned and released.

The investigation is ongoing.
