Police find no evidence of gunfire after reports of someone shooting from a downtown Houston roof

HOUSTON, Texas — Police found no evidence of gunfire after responding at about 2:20 a.m. to a report of shots fired from the roof of a vacant building in the 800 block of St. Joseph Parkway in downtown Houston.

According to Houston police, two people gave officers different accounts. One said the shots came from a car, while the other said they might have come from the building.

Officers secured the perimeter, and a police helicopter crew spotted three people painting graffiti on the roof. Officers found no bullet fragments. One of the people who spoke with officers left, and the other later said he was unsure whether a gun had been fired.

“It’s pretty scary stuff,” said a person at the scene who said they lived a couple of blocks away. Another described having to take a detour near their apartment. “They made me go around the cops,” the resident said.

Police cleared the scene without searching the building, citing concerns about its structural safety and limited resources for investigating a nonviolent misdemeanor. Investigators will try to identify the three people seen on the roof.
