HOUSTON, TX – An officer was critically injured after being shot in the head following a chase that ended in South Houston.
The shooting occurred on 6th Street between Avenue A and B. According to the South Houston Police Department, the incident began as an attempted traffic stop that escalated into a slow-speed pursuit through South Houston, into Houston, and back before ending at a residence where the vehicle was registered.
Police said the gray Mustang pulled into the driveway of the home, where one officer approached the driver’s side and another approached the passenger side. Officers observed the male driver on his cellphone.
According to police, the driver refused commands to exit the vehicle and then pulled out a shotgun, shooting the officer on the passenger side in the head.
Law enforcement returned fire, and the driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. It is unclear whether he was struck by return fire or died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
