HCSO: Security Guard Fatally Shot during Robbery Attempt at Illegal Game Room in Harris County; Suspect Arrested

On Monday, June 19, 2023, at 12:09 AM, Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) District 1 Patrol deputies responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting incident at 5050 FM 1960 W. Suite 112 in Houston, Harris County, Texas.

Upon arrival, deputies discovered Carlos Arzuaga, a 58-year-old male, lying on the sidewalk in front of a nondescript illegal game room, with apparent gunshot wounds. Arzuaga was found wearing Battle Dressed Pants (BDU) and a polo-style shirt with a “Security Officer” insignia on the front. Despite the response of EMS personnel, Arzuaga was pronounced dead at the scene. According to information gathered by deputies, Arzuaga was working as an armed security guard at the game room when he attempted to thwart an armed robbery by two unknown black male suspects. He sustained gunshot injuries during the incident. While some witnesses fled the scene after the shooting, others remained present.

Following the incident, HCSO Homicide Investigators and Crime Scene personnel arrived at the location to conduct further investigations. The investigators interviewed witnesses, examined physical evidence, and obtained surveillance footage, which aided in the identification of the two black male suspects involved in the robbery. The motive for the shooting was determined to be robbery. The suspects fled the scene in a dark-colored sedan.

On Friday, June 23, 2023, members of the Harris County Deputies assigned to the Violent Persons Task Force (VIPER) and Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) apprehended 25-year-old Jhekori Simpson in the 1100 block of Langwick Drive, Houston, Texas. HCSO Homicide Investigators conducted an interview with Simpson, during which he confessed to shooting and killing Carlos Arzuaga, the 58-year-old security guard, during a planned robbery at the illegal game room located at 5050 FM 1960 Rd. W. Suite 112. Simpson has been charged with Capital Murder and is currently in custody at the Harris County Jail. Homicide Investigators have identified a second suspect in this case and are actively seeking to charge them.
