HOUSTON, TX – A tragic crash at the intersection of Fuqua Street and Bathurst Avenue left a toddler dead and a grandmother injured Wednesday morning.
According to Cmdr. Crawford with the Houston Police Department’s Vehicular Crimes Division, the incident occurred around 10:35 a.m. as the grandmother was walking her approximately 2-year-old grandson in a stroller across the intersection. A vehicle traveling northbound on Bathurst made a left turn onto Fuqua and struck the pair in the crosswalk.
Emergency responders with the Houston Fire Department transported both victims to area hospitals. The child was pronounced deceased, while the grandmother sustained injuries but is expected to survive.
The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. Impairment does not appear to have been a factor. Police noted the driver failed to yield the right of way to pedestrians in the crosswalk.
No charges have been filed at this time, but the investigation remains ongoing.
