HOUSTON, TX – Houston police are investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of a 9-year-old girl at 6600 Southwest Freeway (South U.S. Highway 59) around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 2.
According to the Houston Police Department’s Vehicular Crimes Division, the child was a passenger in a black Nissan Rogue traveling northbound when the vehicle was struck from behind by a Kia Soul, also traveling northbound. She was transported to an area hospital, where she was pronounced deceased. Her identity is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
Three occupants of the Kia sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to an area hospital.
The driver of the Nissan, identified as Jefry Jose Canaca Alvarenga, 28, was determined to be intoxicated. He was subsequently charged with driving while intoxicated with a child under 15 in the 182nd State District Court.
The investigation is ongoing.
