HOUSTON, TX – A fiery crash claimed the life of a driver who fled from officers attempting a traffic stop on Westheimer Road just before 9:30 p.m. Sunday night.
The video above shows the suspect’s vehicle fully engulfed in flames near the intersection of Westheimer and Fondren. According to a witness who shared the footage, “Nasty fatal crash, everyone that was around ran to it. Did everything they could to help everyone and the guy inside the car. Unfortunately, he died burning alive.”
The incident began near 8821 Westheimer Road when officers with Memorial Village Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle for having no tail lights. The driver did not stop, and officers did not initiate a pursuit.
Later that evening, officers again saw the same vehicle without tail lights and attempted another traffic stop. The driver again fled eastbound on Westheimer, running multiple red lights.
The suspect vehicle struck two vehicles at the intersection of Westheimer and Gessner but continued eastbound. Upon reaching Fondren Road, the vehicle struck another car, then crashed near a building and a pole. The vehicle became fully engulfed in flames.
The driver, who was the only occupant, was unable to escape and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver of a white Crown Victoria was transported by ambulance and is expected to recover. Others involved in the crash at Gessner sustained minor injuries.
The investigation is ongoing.
