Multiple rescued, three hospitalized after arsonist sets southwest Houston apartment complex on fire

HOUSTON, TX – Multiple people were rescued and three were hospitalized after a fire broke out at the Sterling Point Apartments in the 6600 block of Dunlap Street around 10 p.m. on July 4.

Houston Fire Department crews from Engine 51 were initially dispatched for an assault call, but upon arrival discovered signs of a fire in the area. The incident was upgraded to a fire response, with the blaze ultimately located at 6650 Dunlap Street—on the opposite side of the complex from the original address at 6601 Dunlap.

Ladder 51 and District 28 arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from a three-story apartment building.

Firefighters conducted five rescues: four individuals were pulled directly from the burning structure, and one person jumped from a balcony and was later transported by ambulance.

Among those injured were a 13-year-old girl and her mother, both of whom sustained burns and were taken to Texas Children’s Hospital. A suspect, who was also burned, was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital with a police escort.

All known residents were accounted for, and three other individuals left the scene on their own. No firefighters were injured during the incident.

Crews initially encountered delays in establishing a water supply due to traffic on Bellaire Boulevard. Once resolved, firefighters rapidly brought the fire under control.
