Mayday called after firefighter injured in northwest Houston house fire

HOUSTON, TX – A firefighter was injured while battling a house fire in the 7600 block of Wedgewood in northwest Houston around 9:12 p.m. Friday night.

According to the Houston Fire Department, crews arrived to find heavy fire in the rear of the home. Initial reports suggested a possible person trapped inside, leading firefighters to begin an aggressive offensive attack. While performing ventilation work on the roof, a firefighter from Station 28 was injured while coming down and a mayday was called.

The mayday automatically triggered a second-alarm response, bringing an estimated 50 to 70 personnel to the scene. The injured firefighter, a six-year department veteran, was transported to Memorial Hermann Medical Center where she is conscious and alert. No civilians were injured in the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and a review into the firefighter’s injury will also be conducted.
